We complement learning to fly fish with other outdoor activities. These are available for the students and their families. The aim of each outdoor activity is to relate fishing out other local customs. One can cross rivers on horseback or travel by boat to get to beautiful fishing spots. The views of the rivers and adjacent lakes and lagoons can be enjoyed from the mountains as one learn about the local flora and fauna when trekking through ancient walking paths. For those who want to feel as close to the river as possible, why not take a kayak ride down river? All the activities that are available help the students and their families to feel connected to the environment, the culture, to fishing, and to their community.

Fishing Rio Puelo
"Let the turquoise waters of our beloved river embrace you."
This river is well-known amongst anglers worldwide. In spite of its reputation as one of the best fishing spots in southern Chile, anglers enjoy open spaces and privacy when fishing. Fishing trips here are usually conducted very early in the morning, until about 10 am, and late in the afternoon. These are the best times to catch salmon and chinook in the river. There are many brilliant spots to fish and the views of the surrounding mountains are absolutely stunning, especially in the afternoon.
Wading
"When I get thirsty, I don't need to go anywhere to fetch water... The glaciers send down their purity... I just drink where I am standing."
We also fish for trout in smaller rivers and in private lagoons. Full day trips can be arranged and if you travel with your family, they can include picnics and tents by the shore, so the whole family can join in. Alternatively, you can go fishing early in the morning and we can arrange horses to bring your family to meet you later in the day.
For those who might want to challenge themselves, we can take you up river where the terrain is less forgiving. Trekking/wading up river becomes increasingly challenging the further into the mountains you venture. Should you wish to stay and sleep outdoors, we can arrange this also!
Deep water and night fishing in the estuary

Our fishing trips in the estuary are conducted early in the morning and at night. You can choose to travel by boat or kayak to different fishing spots. When fishing from kayaks we use fly to hunt for trout or salmon. At night we take you to some of the deepest parts of the estuary to fish for “congrio” (congreel). The night trips are fabulous – you enjoy the view of the stars as we share local stories of flying witches (brujos) and ghost ships (caleuches). Be warned – we swear that some of these are real stories! And, if you would like to enjoy your fresh catch in situ, we can arrange for you to dine in the middle of the estuary too.
Trekking

Trekking in Puelo is an activity that you cannot miss! The whole area is surrounded by beautiful mountains and tracks still unexplored. Immerse yourself into the deep silence of ancient temperate rainforests. Pass waterfalls and giant Alerce trees as your senses take in the velvet green landscape of the surrounding national parks. More experienced hikers can also head for the snow line and enjoy panoramic views from our local volcanoes. Along the trip you will hear stories (real stories) about mythology that were passed down to us by our ancestors. When it comes to trekking in Puelo, the sky’s the limit!.
Fishing

Fishing Rio Futaleufu

The Futaleufu river is a gorgeous place. Fishing here is an amazing experience not only because of the quality of the fish but also because of the beauty of the area. Travelling to Futaleufu from Rio Puelo is itself an experience that will leave you remembering amazing mountains and rivers for a very long time. When times to leave comes… you will promise to return. The fish are amazing. The brown trouts have a dark, chocolate-like dense brown colour which will make you want to hold onto them to admire their beauty “a bit longer”.
Trail riding on horseback

The traditional way of experiencing Rio Puelo is on horseback. Nothing beats a lazy afternoon trail ride along the river with the mountains towering up around you, the sweet grassy smell of horses and that feeling of being deeply connected to nature.
